Koalas of Raymond Island Inc. was formed to care for the growing number of sick, injured and orphaned koalas on Raymond Island. What began as one wildlife carer and a small group of friends has grown into a registered Wildlife Shelter, run entirely by volunteers including five wildlife carers. Our team provides hands-on care for koalas that need treatment, rehabilitation or support to return to the wild.
Raymond Island is known for its strong koala population and attracts visitors from across Australia and overseas. While the island is a popular destination, there is no direct government funding for koala care. The shelter relies on donated funds, fundraising and community support to cover daily costs such as veterinary bills, medications, medical supplies, joey formula, specialist food, rescue equipment and ongoing supplies needed to care for the animals
From rescue and medical care to rehabilitation and release, our volunteers support koalas every step of their recovery journey.
Our team responds to calls for sick, distressed or injured koalas. We collect the animals safely and transport them to the shelter for assessment.
Each koala is assessed by trained carers and, when required, receives veterinary treatment, medication, special food or joey formula.
Once stable and healthy, koalas are released back into suitable areas of Raymond Island where they can live safely in the wild.
Our work is shaped by a simple belief that every koala deserves a chance to recover and live safely in its natural habitat.
Our shelter rescues and cares for over 100 koalas every year. Many arrive with injury, illness or without a parent to guide them. With the help of volunteers and community support, these animals receive treatment and a safe place to recover. Once healthy, they return to their natural environment on Raymond Island where they can live freely and continue to be part of the island’s unique koala population
Our shelter is run entirely by volunteers and registered wildlife carers. Every person who joins our team plays a role in the wellbeing of the koalas. Volunteers help with feeding, cleaning, observation, rescue transport, record keeping and general care. Their dedication ensures that the koalas receive attention, support and a safe place to heal.
